5 Tips for Choosing What to Wear For Your Engagement Photos in San Diego.

Taking your engagement photos is one of the first steps in wedding planning. More relaxed than your wedding day shoot, your engagement photo session allows you to get used to having your photo taken with your fiancé, bond and connect with your significant other before the big day, and gives you a collection of gorgeous photos that will last a lifetime.

For many couples, this is their first time being photographed together professionally so you may not know what to expect. Here are five tips for choosing what to wear for your engagement photos.
1. Take into account location and time of year
When planning your outfit, be sure to take into account the location of your shoot as well as the time of year. Jeans are great for casual photos in a park but you may want something more flowy if you’re having a shoot at the beach, or plaid if you’re incorporating the beautiful autumn foliage into your photos. Pay attention to the weather and dress for the season. Not only will being too hot or too cold take away from the fun of your engagement shoot, melting makeup or watery eyes are not a good luck on anyone.

2. Pamper yourself before the shoot
Your engagement photo shoot session is the perfect opportunity for you to see what your wedding makeup will look like. A lot of brides schedule their hair and makeup trials for right before their shoot so they can see how their hair and makeup will look in pictures. Get a manicure prior to the photo session so your affection for each other is the focus of any hand-holding shot, rather than chipped nail polish. If you plan on doing any ‘barefoot on the beach’ shots, get a pedicure as well. Last but certainly not least, clean your engagement ring so it sparkles. This is your moment to not only show off your love to your friends and family, but to also show off that shiny new engagement ring!

3. Be comfortable
Plan your outfit around the setting and location of your shoot. Will there be hiking involved? Will you be lifted or carried? Imagine yourself going through the terrain–you won’t want to be wearing stilettos. If you know you’re going to be hiking to get to your location and want to wear heels in the photos, wear sneakers and bring heels with you to change into. Make sure you try on the outfits you plan on wearing before the shoot. You want to feel comfortable during the shoot, not tugging away at an uncomfortable neckline or pulling down a dress that’s too short. Wear what you look and feel best in. If you’re a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, stick with what you know works. Either wear a favorite flattering outfit or if you’re buying something new, try it on and take a few pictures so you know whether or not your outfit looks as great in pictures as it does on the hanger.

4. Coordinate with your fiancé, but don’t match
Show you’re a stylish couple without looking too “matchy.” You want the look to feel balanced rather than being exactly the same. One thing to remember is you don’t have to wear the same exact color. Choose colors which are different but compliment each other like navy and brown or black and white. Style-wise, make sure you both coordinate as well. You want the photos to have a cohesive look and feel. For example, if the bride-to-be is wearing an elegant dress, then be sure the future hubby is dressed up as well.

5. Bring multiple options
It’s a good idea to bring several different outfits so that you can change for a different location. Most couples typically bring 2-3 outfits to the shoot depending on the locations and how much time they have. Couples almost always end up doing at least one outfit change during their shoot. The future groom doesn’t always change his entire outfit, instead he might change only his shirt or jacket.

Don’t forget to have fun with your photoshoot! Your engagement is an incredibly fun and short period of the entirety of your married lives together. Focus on being yourself. Dress up, but be comfortable. Interact with your partner the way that you normally do. This is your time to show off your love to all of your friends and family! Your engagement shoot is meant to be fun, so oof around, laugh, be you.
